Got a Monitor you’re not using?

Here is how I quadrupled my productivity by adding a second monitor to my laptop in a few easy steps…

Open your Control Panel and click on Personalization and you get the screen below

There you want to click on “Connect a projector or other external display”. That will bring you to the Windows Mobility Center

At this point make sure your external monitor is connected to the Comm port of your computer, then click Connect Display which will give you the next Screen.

Choose Show different parts of my desktop on each dispaly and apply/Ok.

You should now be seeing the same Background on both screens but will only see the Icons on the “Main screen”. Open an application, then drag it to the other screen (be sure it is reduced in size, maximized won’t move).

Each application will work independently on the individual monitor you choose to work on. (ie Internet Explorer on the right screen and Outlook Express on the other screen) This way you can perform multiple tasks on each monitor independently.

Experiment with different applications you use simultainously using both screens and you will see a marked increase in your productivity too.

The above was done using Windows Vista but any good Operation System will be similar in principal to accomplish the same objective.

Sure there are lots of Self-help, Tips and How To Blogs out there. So, why should I start another one? Other than the fact that I think I have something of value to offer that many others don’t…

I started this Blog for 2 reasons:

 The First is for you… Not every problem needs to be addressed by some unknown “professional” sitting at a help desk who doesn’t really care if your problem is solved as long as they get paid. Many of the little tweaks and adjustments as well as some hardware/software installations can be performed by you, with a little helpful information. This Blog exists to give you some pointers on things you can accomplish yourself – without outside help.

The Second is purely selfish… I needed a platform to promote my business of becoming your “Personal Help Line”. There will be times when even the information I provide in some of the Blog Posts will not be enough to do what is necessary to get your Computer Back in Service. When you are having problems with your Computer, Blog or Website and can not get any satisfaction with the Manufacturer’s help desk or on one of the many Forums designed for self-help or if you just can’t figure it out yourself, you can Depend On Me.

I will be presenting various tips and tricks for fixing problems I have found while working with and on computers throughout my career. But new things pop up all the time. So, if you have any questions that haven’t been addressed in any posts, please use the comments section or the “regular” Contact Form to let me know.

Even though the Official Launch of My Computer Back in Service won’t be until 8/20/07, I would like your opinion on the Basic Layout, Header, Footer, Page Setup and Overall Feel of the New Blog.

If you are here, it is because we already know each other through Blogging. Either I read your’s and/or you read mine and we have all become a part of the same community. If you like it, let me know. And conversely, let me know if you Hate anything about it.

As I said, the Blog will not go live until 8/20/07, so there is plenty of time to make any changes that you recommend. I’ll be tweaking anyway, so now is the time to let me know if you think something works or doesn’t work.
