I come across quite a few programs, applications and features almost every day in the course of normal work-a-day research trying to find the right tools to use in the Computer Consulting Business.

As a result, I often find some little known Free Downloadable or Online Features that could be of use to almost anyone to make their computing experience a little bit better and more productive.

Have you ever wondered why some Blogs look better than others on your iPhone, iPad or other mobile device?

That’s because the good lookers are using something like Mofuse as a way to create a Mobile Version of their blogs so they look good, even on a cell phone.

The service is Free for Blogs although they do have a paid version for a Professional setting with no advertisements. The main advantage of using Mofuse is that it is simple to set up an account and they have a revenue sharing setup if you want to make a little money on the side.

Check out the Blog Version of Mofuse to set up a way for your readers to find your blog on the run.

Ever wonder why some websites and blogs have their cute little Logo showing in your toolbar and others don’t?

Favicon from Pics

Its Free and easy to create your own Favicon.

Go to Favicon from Pics

Upload your image & create Favicon

Download .ico file to your computer

Upload it to the “root” file of your site

Navigate to your index.html file & insert between and

You should now have your Favicon set and ready to go. (It should also show in your Favorites bar on Windows).

Sorry, this won’t work on Blogger.com or WordPress.com because you don’t have access to the “root” folder (it’s THEIR domain).

As anyone who works online knows, when someone lands on your site you have a split second for them to make a decision if it’s where they want to be. That being the case, if your page loads slowly, they will be gone before they can see what you have to offer.

If you have a WordPress Blog then there is a solution (at least to page-load time).

WP Super Cache will increase page load times for your visitors and readers by generating html files that are served directly by Apache without processing comparatively heavy PHP scripts (especially useful if you are Dugg or Stumbled upon).

You can read more specifics about the plugin on the home page of the author of WP Super Cache or go directly to the Dowload Page to start using it right away.

Just so you know, I use the plugin on all my WordPress Blogs and highly recommend it for that just in case you’re Dugg moment.

Maintenance Mode (WP Plugin)

Normally, when setting up a new blog or website I will use WampServer for testing new Themes and plugins. However, sometimes you need to do some type of maintenance or setup & testing on a Live Blog.

This tool lets you show visitors a Customized page instead of the normal error pages they get when visiting your site while you are doing something in the background.

As an added feature, you can still view your site while logged in while visitors get your customized message telling them when to return to see your updated page.

How to Recover Your WordPress Password in an Emergency

Ok, your Password doesn’t work to log into your WordPress Blog.

You tried the e-mail password recovery from the Login Screen and you either didn’t get the mail or the password doesn’t work.

You tried going through the MySQL command line and making changes there and even tried Resetting your password through phpMyAdmin (both of which should only be tried by experienced users) to no avail.

You even tried to reinstall your WP installation from your Backup file (you Do have a backup right?) and still can’t get into your Administration page.

I know just how frustrating all those steps can be, I had to go through them myself and none of them worked for me either.

Then I found the emergency.php script on the village/idiot.org.

It was originally written for versions 2.2 and 2.3x of WordPress. Well, I’m here to tell you it works up to version 2.7x from my own experience.

Installation instructions

Dowload the zip file and unzip the file
Upload the emergency.php file to the root directory of your WordPress installation (where wp-config.php is)
Type http:// yourblogname.com/emergency.php into your favorite browser.You get a screen that looks like the one above.
After you are able to log into your WordPress blog, DELETE the emergency.php file from your server. You don’t want to risk someone else getting in there this way.

Last but not least, Change your password in the Users portion of the Administration page.

When you need to know the dimentions of an image or how many pixels there are in a particular section of the screen, how do you find out?

Well, you can always get out your trusty, real world ruler and convert from inches & centimeters to pixels or use this handy little tool.

A Ruler for Windows

A Ruler for Windows works on any version of Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7 and is super easy to use.

Just Download the Application and install it. That simple.

It can be adjusted to various lengths, horizontally or vertically. As well as setting the “tics” on the top or bottom, left or right of the ruler for ease of use.

FastStone Capture is a nice, clean, Free, easy to use screen capture program that I have been using for quite some time.

As a matter of fact that little pic in this paragraph was captured using the program as was every picture in this past Wednesdays post.

So, if you use or want to use screen captures in your online publishing, I recommend downloading FastStone Capture.

It’s Easy to Put Your Logo on RSS Feeds

I have spoken with a lot of business people with at least some web presence recently. They all have a fair grasp of the importance of using RSS Feeds and e-mail subscriptions to further their reach on the internet.

However, more than a few of these business people DON’T even have their Company Logo on their Feeds.

I did a short, step by step ScreenCast to show just how easy it is to add a Logo to Feeds.

Step by Step Installation of WordPress Plugins

Installation of any WordPress Plugin is quite similar to any other in the steps that need to be followed in order to function properly. For the most part the only differences will be What you have to Upload to your Host Server.

Every WordPress Plugin I have ever installed always starts with downloading a .zip file. This should include ALL the information, folders, files and particular steps you will need to take in order to complete the installation.

Step by Step

Download the .zip file…
- to Your Computer in it’s entirety. Save it to any Folder you feel comfortable using ie. “downloads” or “zip files”. Confirm you received all the files. You can use your default expansion program if you are using an Operating System that has that function or something like Winzip for the next step.
Unzip the .zip file…
- to a folder on Your Computer where you can access everything in all the Folders and Files that have been expanded. [Keep the Expanded Folder separate from the Zip Folder, this will help avoid some confusion.] Normally these will default to the “Plugin Name Folder” and include the necessary files and folders you need to use the plugin, and a “readme” file which should have all the Special Instructions to ensure proper functionality of the Plugin (be sure to read it!).
Log in…
- to your Host Server and access your WordPress files for the Blog to which you are Uploading the Plugin for installation. This is ALWAYS in the public_html file. Make sure you keep track of where your expanded folders and files are stored on your computer for the next step.
Navigate to wp_content/plugins…
- If you need a Folder for the Plugin, Create the Folder with the Suggested Name in the “read me” text. Upload all the Files and Folders necessary (being sure to Create any Sub-folders ie. “image” or “features” and Upload any required files within those folders).
- If No Separate Folder is needed, just Upload the File(s) making sure to create any Required Folders such as “cache” for storage of temporary information. (Folders like “cache” require the ability for the plugin to write to the folder for storage, be sure to open the folder so writing information is enabled).
Save everything (as necessary) and Log Out of your Host Server
Go to the WP-Admin of your Blog and sign in as Administrator
Navigate to the Administration-Dashboard-Plugins Page of the Blog and ACTIVATE the Plugin
If needed, ADD any code to the .php files as appropriate (you did read the “read me” right?) and SAVE any Changes

Your WordPress Plugin should function as promised as long as you followed ALL the necessary steps.
